Businessman hopes to honor veterans

The space above Arabica in Willoughby eventually will become a Freedom Hall or Liberty Hall if owner Kenny Godnavec has his way. The empty rooms echo history, the long windows reminiscent of a time past.
But to achieve the concept that Godnavec has in mind, he needs the community’s help. The second floor of the building that houses the Arabica Coffee House stands at 4148 Erie St. and Godnavec hopes the upper level will become a hall full of photos honoring military personnel who are currently serving or have served.
“I appreciate what the veterans have done,” Godnavec said. “It is one group we should be honoring.”
His father was an Army veteran of World War II and never really talked about his experiences while overseas. Godnavec is asking that families honor their loved ones by submitting a photograph, a small story about the veteran and mementos, if they wish.
“They will all be displayed,” Godnavec said. “It is time we stand up and honor these people.”
He eventually hopes to open the upper floor of the building to families with children, so the young can learn what the veterans have done to protect the rights we all cherish.
“It’s a labor of love and I will take my time,” Godnavec said.
Those who would like to submit a photo of a loved one can scan and email photos with a short story and Godnavec will frame them. Email information to kennygodnavec@yahoo.com; photos and stories can be dropped off or mailed to the Arabica to the attention of Kenny Godnavec, 4148 Erie St., Willoughby, OH 44094; or call him direct at 440-749-3423.

Local air show a fun afternoon

I grew up enjoying the airport, Dad would buy us ice cream and then head to the nearest airfield to watch the planes take off and land. He would call the take off and landings like a sportscaster calls a game.
This is air show weekend and I will be there Saturday afternoon to enjoy the aircraft. The Gathering of Eagles at Willoughby Lost Nation Airport always is a fun way to spend the afternoon.
The event is different from the Cleveland National Air show at Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland. The local show enables you to talk to the pilots, ask questions about the aircraft and learn something new about history.
The show is open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $13 per person or $25 for couples, and children 4 to 12 years of age will be admitted for $7. All proceeds from the show benefit the restoration of “Doc” a B-29 being restored to flying condition.

Marine works to keep Battlefield promise

Brian Morgan of Mentor is a Marine from the Second Marine Division who is working to keep a promise he made to a buddy. Morgan was badly wounded in Fallujah, Iraq, and his buddy was killed.
Morgan promised he would restore “Jenny,” a 1989 Jeep YJ, to look like a World War II “Willies” Jeep. The Willies was the all-terrain vehicle of WWII. “That is all he talked about while we were there,” Morgan said. “He was a phenomenal Marine and he served because he wanted to.”
The dream of the two men was to drive cross country to California together in the restored Jeep. But that dream shattered the day the two were hit in Iraq.
Morgan recovered and is now working to put the Jeep together and keep the promise to his friend.
The engine and transmission work are done.
Morgan spoke with Jim Bair of Lake Transmission in Wickliffe, and said he intended on making payments until he could pick up the Jeep.
Bair recalled the conversation.
“I talked to him and he told me all that his buddy talked about was taking the Jeep cross country to sit on the beach,” Bair said. “It was an opportunity to help a veteran. I felt we could contribute.”
Morgan was surprised a few days after dropping off “Jenny” at the shop, Bair called him and told him to pick it up, it was ready. But Morgan was not ready for the surprise that awaited him. The Jeep was done and there was no charge.
Morgan plans to have the restoration completed by late summer and drive to Chattanooga to visit with his buddy’s family, then drive to the West Coast to keep the promise he made in Fallujah. Semper Fi Marine.

Fairport Mardi Gras a Fourth of July tradition

The Fairport Mardi Gras has long been a Fourth of July tradition in Lake County.
As a kid I would hop a boat ride from Ram Island Boat Club to the Mardi Gras, often climbing off the boat onto the inner harbor breakwall and walking to the festival. Times have changed and boating is just a fond memory.
If you are a veteran, it does not matter how you get there.
But make it a point to go when the Mardi Gras will honor veterans beginning at noon July 4.
A ceremony honoring veterans will start at 12:30 p.m., with
members of veterans groups participating in the presentation of colors, music and an honor guard.
All veterans and their families will be treated to free hot dogs, chips and souvenir bottled water. Mardi Gras vendors will offer food and drink specials throughout the day.
July 4 is a day to celebrate the country and the freedoms we all enjoy. It is also a time to thank those who fought for those freedoms.
