Team RWB addresses PTSD with endurance sports

Team Red, White and Blue addresses mental health issues within the veterans community through endurance sports, leadership training camps and volunteer activities to enhance the lives of veterans and assist them in reintegration into the local community.
Thomas Beers, veterans outreach director of Team RWB Cleveland/Akron, will speak at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland at 11:45 a.m. Nov. 11. The public is welcome.
The Cleveland/Akron chapter of Team RWB will participate in the national flag relay on Nov. 4. The relay is being done to show support for our nation’s heroes as it crosses the country carried by members of the RWB team. The relay began Sept. 11 in San Francisco, California, and will end on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, just outside of Washington, D.C., at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Team Cleveland/Akron has 12 runners who will participate over challenging terrain, beginning in Fairview, Ohio, just east of Columbus, crossing the Ohio River into West Virginia and ending in Claysville, Pennsylvania. Team Cleveland/Akron is the only RWB team that will step into three states. For more information about Team Red, White and Blue, visit TEAMRWB.org.

Ladies Auxiliary President visits Painesville post
The Ladies Auxiliary of Painesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2595, 570 Liberty St. in Painesville, will host State President Sandra Uzell at a whistle stop membership pickup visit at 3 p.m. Nov. 2 at the post home. Dine to Donate’ at Applebee’s
Operation S.T.A.T. will host a “Dine to Donate” night at Applebee’s on Maplegrove Road in Willoughby Hills on Nov. 5. Applebee’s will donate 15 percent of the bill to Operation S.T.A.T. from each patron who visits the restaurant with the Dine to Donate flier. The flier is available on the Operation STAT Facebook page.

Marine Corps Birthday Ball announced
The 239th USMC Birthday Ball sponsored by Marine Corps League Detachment 782 will be 6 p.m. to midnight Nov. 8 at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall, 133 South Spruce St. in Jefferson. Madison Library helps with fundraising
The Madison Public Library, 6111 Middle Ridge Road in Madison, is helping local veterans with the naming of the Madison High School football field.
The field will be the “Dick Hamblin Field.” Hamblin was the first local casualty of the Vietnam War.
The library will have a donation jar out at the library the week of Veterans Day, Nov. 10 to 15. Funds collected will be used to purchase a sign for under the scoreboard.

SALs host Poor Man’s Reverse Raffle
The Sons of the American Legion will host a Poor Man’s Reverse Raffle beginning at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at American Legion Post 678, 570 E. 328th St. in Willowick.

Work party at Boulevard of Flags
The Eastlake Boulevard of 500 Flags volunteer committee will host a work party at 9 a.m. Nov. 15 to lower the flags.

Civil Air Patrol honored

The Air Force Association has honored the Civil Air Patrol with the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of 70 years of helping to secure America, with special mention of its World War II service.
The Civil Air Patrol will be recognized with the Congressional Gold Medal honoring the service that the CAP gave to the country during World War II. The medal was signed into law on May 30 and will be presented in Washington, D.C., in December.
The Civil Air Patrol was founded on Dec. 1, 1941, only a week before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The first CAP members helped support the war effort with patrols of the American coastline. They assisted in locating German submarines that were trying to sink American ships full of cargo and supplies bound for Europe.
The CAP reported 173 suspected submarines, performed 5,684 special convoy missions; the pilots reported 17 floating mines, 36 bodies, 91 ships in distress and 363 survivors in the water.
By the end of World War II the CAP, as the auxiliary force of the Army Air Forces, had flown more than 750,000 hours on all missions, with a loss of 65 members and 150 aircraft.

Nonfiction author to speak at Notre Dame
Geauga County Library Foundation’s Distinguished Speaker series will feature Alex Kershaw, author of acclaimed World War II nonfiction, at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 8 at the Sisters of Notre Dame Education Center Auditorium, 13000 Auburn Road in Munson Township.

The Painesville Police Department will host a stuff the bus event to benefit Sub Zero Mission from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 9.
Warming items such as gloves, scarves, fleece garments, hoodies, sleeping bags, tents, blankets, new socks, boots, hand warmers and flannel are all welcome. The bus will be parked in the police and fire lot off of East Erie Street next to Arby’s.

What are you doing for Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is Nov. 11, which is less than one month from now. Will the area posts be doing anything special to honor the country’s veterans?
Ceremonies honoring the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces are usually the highlight of the day. The posts and detachments in the area are encouraged to submit details of what will be happening on that day and where the public can take part in honors ceremonies.

Willoughby VFW offers fish fry dinners

Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 Ohio treats Veterans to fall picnic fun

On September 30th Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 hosted a cookout for the residents of the Lorain VA Transition home, 9401 Lorain Avenue, Lorain. Members mingled with the residents enjoying typical picnic fare.

Music and karaoke sung by residents of the facility provided fun entertainment during a nice fall evening.

Auxiliary member celebrates 50 years

Congratulations to Bernice Dworning on her 50 years of American Legion Auxiliary membership.
Dworning is a member of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 678 in Willowick-Eastlake. She is the unit historian and has served as the chairwoman of the Americanism Committee for many years, ensuring that young ladies from the area experience Buckeye Girls State.
The week provides girls with hands-on experience in government by creating a mock government with the participants taking part by way of holding office.
Dworning also has been president and secretary of the unit during her 50 years of auxiliary service.
“She is always willing to share her knowledge and help in any way she can,” said Maribeth Shankman, president of Unit 678. “I want to thank Bernice for being an excellent example and role model we can only try to emulate as Auxiliary members.”

Fish fry at Fairport VFW

Annual Fall Veterans Memorial Oct. 4

The Fall Veterans Memorial will begin at noon Oct. 4 at 8500 Civic Center Drive, in front of Mentor City Hall.
The event pays tribute to the anniversary of the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, on Oct. 23, 1983.
Elisa M. Camara lost her older brother, Sgt. Mecot Camara, when a truck laden with explosives rammed the gate of the barracks. Camara and 240 other Americans died in the explosion.
Camara will talk about her brother and how his death in the bombing has affected her life in the intervening 31 years. The public is encouraged to attend.

Young Marines looking for staff members
The Greater Lake County Young Marines group is looking for additional staff members.

Prior service in any branch of the military is preferred, but not necessary. Female volunteers are especially encouraged to apply.

Legion Auxiliary raffles basket
The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 678 is hosting a basket raffle. The basket contains $50 gift certificates from Petie’s Family Restaurant, Cala’s Pizza and Rudy’s Meats. Willoughby Hills ladies host bake sale
The Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4358, 29412 White Road in Willoughby Hills, will host its annual bake sale at 3 p.m. Oct. 4.

Madison ladies serve dinner first Saturday
VFW Post 8548, 7604 Lake Road E. in Madison Township, will host the monthly Ladies Auxiliary dinner on the first Saturday evening of each month at the post home.
The ladies will serve dinner 4 to 7 p.m. each first Saturday. Proceeds benefit VFW Auxiliary charities.

The Ladies Auxiliary Unit of VFW Post 3863, 33641 Vine St. in Eastlake, will host a clambake from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Oct. 4 at the post home.

PLAV to host Fisher House fundraiser
Polish Legion of American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary Chapter 31 will host a benefit for Greater Cleveland Fisher House at Tizzano’s Party Center, 1361 E. 260th Street in Euclid.
The event will be 4 to 10 p.m. Nov. 15 with a dinner buffet and live music.
