House would give new meaning to ‘Goodnight Chesty whereever you are’

The home of my dreams is up for sale, but unfortunately it is a bit out of my price range.
The three-bedroom, two-bath home is located in Saluda, Virginia, where the home values are a bit higher than they are here in Lake County. The asking price is $395,000.
The home has pocket doors, beautiful highly polished wood floors, and a wonderful staircase in the center hall entry and it sits on 3.37 acres. Did I happen to mention that it was the retirement home of Lt. Gen. Lewis Burwell Puller?
Puller was one of the most famous Marines and was nicknamed “Chesty” because of his proper posture and the chest full of medals earned during his career in the Marine Corps. He was awarded five Navy Crosses, and a Distinguished Service Cross.
The home is the center of a nonprofit group’s efforts through a GoFundMe campaign. The group hopes to purchase the property and turn it into a place for Marines to meet and perhaps find a place to stay for a few days. Puller will still be helping “his” Marines.
Puller has been described as a Marine’s Marine and even today Marines are heard saying, “Goodnight Chesty wherever you are” at the end of the day.

Fall season brings flurry of activity at posts

Fall has got to be my favorite time of year. The season change brings about the cooler temperatures and the trees change color.
There is a flurry of activity as we put away the summer toys and begin to dig in for the long cold winter. This is also the time of year that begins a blizzard of activities at all of the posts.
Fall is clambake season; on Veterans Day, we remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice; and of course it is the time of year that preparations for the Marine Corps Birthday Ball are well underway.

Patriot Day should be time for Americans to reflect

There will be observances around the country in honor of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, now known as Patriot Day.
It is hard to believe that 14 years have gone by since that sunny morning. The newsroom was in shock, just like the rest of the country. I have said this before, that was one day that I was really proud to be a part of this newsroom. The professionalism of the reporters, the organization of the editors and the teamwork of the entire staff was amazing.
The loss of lives that day in 2001 was horrific and should be observed with a moment of silence and the resolve that it should never happen again on American soil. The American people united as one to fight a common foe. Never in my lifetime had I observed the patriotism that seemed to spring up almost overnight after the attack. What happened to that?

This email is worth sharing

Do you know Pvt. Joseph P. Jupina?
The emails I get on a daily basis are usually normal requests to make sure an event is run or a meeting gets into print. Every now and then, something special comes across my desk.
I received an email from Ben L.G. Moolhuijsen of Margraten in the Netherlands. He is one of many European citizens taking care of the graves of U.S. servicemen buried in that country.
Pvt. Joseph P. Jupina was born in Girard, Macoupin County, Illinois, on Sept. 9, 1919, and joined the Army while in Cuyahoga County. Very little else is known about Jupina.
Moolhuijsen’s parents had cared for the grave since the war. Before his father’s death in April 2015, Moolhuijsen promised to continue to take care of the adopted grave of Jupina, who died on April 18, 1945.
Moolhuijsen has begun a search for the soldier’s relatives and has asked for assistance. He is waiting for the Army to send the deceased soldier’s personnel file.
I think it is wonderful that after so many years, a second generation is now taking care of the graves of our fallen, so they will never be forgotten.
