Memorial Day events in Cuyahoga County

The following are some of the events being planned to commemorate Memorial Day. All events are May 28 unless otherwise noted.

Cuyahoga County

-- Mayfield Village will host the 23rd annual Memorial Day Service at 1 p.m. May 27, at Whitehaven Cemetery, 615 SOM Center Road, Mayfield Village.

The event honors veterans of all wars and is one of the finest in Northeast Ohio with representation by government officials, as well as many veterans organizations, Boy Scouts and the Lake County Young Marines. Patriotic music will be lead by the Suburbanaires Chorus and the Erie Heights Brass Ensemble. refreshments will be served.

Volunteers also are needed to place American Flags at the graves of veterans Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Meet back by the tent at Whitehaven. All are welcome. For details, call Mary Singer at 440-449-7315.

-- The Greater Cleveland Boating Association will again sponsor a ceremony aboard the USS Cod docked in Cleveland Harbor.

The ceremony will honor the fallen shipmates from the many boating organizations in and around Northern Ohio.

-- The Euclid Joint Veterans Council Memorial Day Association has announced the theme of the annual parade will be "If you value your freedom, thank a veteran."

Parade forms may be obtained from Chuck Hill at 216-732-9339 or Steve Rushing, commander of VFW Post 1056, at 216-253-3506.

The parade will begin with assembly at 9:30 a.m. at East 228th Street and Lake Shore Boulevard and will step off at 10 a.m. It will proceed west on Lake Shore Boulevard to East 222nd Street, then south on East 222nd Street and end about 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial next to Euclid City Hall, 585 E. 222nd St.

-- American Legion Post 775 will host a service at 11 a.m. at Richmond Heights City Park, 26789 Highland Road. For details, call 216-531-7287.
