Veteran events offer something for everyone

The summer is flying by and there is so much going on at each of the posts and detachments that a person could stay busy seven days a week.
This weekend is jammed with post garage sales, car shows and the ever-present meals. Each event aims to benefit a veterans-related charity or organization.
Take a look at the following events, and I bet you can find something of interest to attend this weekend.

Rolling Thunder hosts annual veterans picnic
Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 will host a picnic at the Louis Stokes Wade Park Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Cleveland beginning at 1 p.m. July 26.
The picnic will include traditional picnic fare: potato salad, chips, baked beans, pastries and pop. With the help of volunteers and other organizations, the event for the veterans at Wade Park is great fun.
Entertainment for the veterans this year will be provided by the band Posse. This annual event is for all of the patients in the veterans hospital.

Legion Color Guard hosts garage sale
The Color Guard of American Legion Post 336, 60 Chester St. in Painesville, will host a garage sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 24 through 26 at the post home. Space is available in the pavilion and out doors. A table in the pavilion will be $7 per day and outside will be $5 per day. For details, call the post home at 440-357-7711.

Steak roast offers membership deal
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1500, 38295 Pelton Road in Willoughby, will host a steak roast and membership drive from 5 to 8 p.m. July 25 at the post home. Tickets are $15 per person and available at the post. Take advantage of a special offer: Bring your DD214 to join for $35, get a free dinner and a second year at half price. Proceeds of the steak roast will benefit the Littlest Heroes Fund. For details, call 440-951-9233.

Meat and Cheese raffle at Newbury Legion
The American Legion, Geauga County Council will host a meat and cheese raffle beginning at 4:30 p.m. July 26 at Newbury American Legion Post 663, 11008 Kinsman Road in Newbury Township.
The raffle will continue until all of the fresh beef, pork, cheese and smokies are gone. There will be a raffle every 10 minutes. Hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages will be available. Legion Post 807 hosts pancake breakfast
Andy Nowacki American Legion Post 807 at Lake Erie College will host a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 27 at its sister post, Brakeman-King Post 336, 60 Chester St. in Painesville. Breakfast will be $5 and tickets will be available at the door. A raffle also will be a part of the fun. All proceeds from the breakfast benefit Boys State.

Euclid Vets second annual Classic Car Show
Euclid Vets Association will host its second annual Classic Car Show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 27 at Tizzano’s Party Center parking lot, 1361 E. 260th St. in Euclid, just south of Route 2.
All classic cars older than 1989 are welcome. Admission is free, but a donation to the Gary Sinese Foundation for Disabled Vets will be appreciated. A DJ playing classic music will entertain and concessions will be available. The first 100 cars registered will be given a goody package. Eastlake VFW hosts garage sale
VFW Post 3863, 33641 Vine St. in Eastlake, will host a garage sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 9 at the post home. Inside tables are available for $15 and outside spaces will be $5. (You supply the table.) Call Kellie at the post home to reserve a table at 440-942-3980.

GIs gather for coffee and doughnuts
GI get-together for coffee and doughnuts will be 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 9 at American Legion Post 459, 14052 Goodwin St. in Burton.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary host Chinese Auction
The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 6519, 752 Water St. in Chardon, will host a Chinese auction from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 9 at the post home. All are welcome. For details, call the post home at 440-285-3699.

Gunny’s Hall offers daily lunches
Gunny’s Hall, 8720 Twinbrook Road in Mentor, is serving daily lunches from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and fish fry dinners on Friday evenings. There are also weekly specials offered. For details, call the hall at 440-974-9380.

Academy Parents seek donations
The Northeast Ohio Air Force Academy Parents Association, a volunteer, tax-exempt organization, will be hosting this year’s 37th annual All Service Academy Ball for Northeast Ohio.
The ball is an annual event to honor Northeast Ohio’s young men and women who are serving our nation and attending one of the five service academies. This ball will host an anticipated 50 cadets and midshipmen with their escorts at the Museum of Aviation Preservation Society in North Canton on Dec. 27.

Patty melts on AMVETS menu
AMVETS Post 109, Sons of AMVETS, 7847 Lake Shore Blvd. in Mentor-on-the-Lake, will serve patty melts July 25 and Aug. 1 between 5 and 8 p.m. at the post home. Several choices of patty melts will be available and will include fresh-cut garlic fries. Prices start at $7. The meal is open to the public. For details, call 440-257-9217.
