Memorial Day a time for reflection

Memorial Day weekend is upon us. There will be cookouts, families will get together and perhaps everyone will take in a parade.
The weekend is a time to remember those who have fallen in defense of the country.
I might be showing my age, but I can remember when it was called Decoration Day. When I heard that, I knew that my brother, sister and I would be piled into the car, among flower pots and gardening tools. My grandmother lived with us until I was in my early teens, so we would make the annual trip to the cemetery to plant flowers and “decorate” the graves for the holiday.
The holiday has been known as Memorial Day since 1966. I have always found it interesting that the day originally started after the Civil War to remember the fallen of what was arguably the most divisive time in our country’s history and we still honor the fallen 150 years later.
