Civil Air Patrol honored

The Air Force Association has honored the Civil Air Patrol with the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of 70 years of helping to secure America, with special mention of its World War II service.
The Civil Air Patrol will be recognized with the Congressional Gold Medal honoring the service that the CAP gave to the country during World War II. The medal was signed into law on May 30 and will be presented in Washington, D.C., in December.
The Civil Air Patrol was founded on Dec. 1, 1941, only a week before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The first CAP members helped support the war effort with patrols of the American coastline. They assisted in locating German submarines that were trying to sink American ships full of cargo and supplies bound for Europe.
The CAP reported 173 suspected submarines, performed 5,684 special convoy missions; the pilots reported 17 floating mines, 36 bodies, 91 ships in distress and 363 survivors in the water.
By the end of World War II the CAP, as the auxiliary force of the Army Air Forces, had flown more than 750,000 hours on all missions, with a loss of 65 members and 150 aircraft.
